There’s no doubt that this past winter was rough. Thanks to the snow that started early and didn’t want to stop, the inches of ice, and the polar vortex, there were times when we didn’t think spring would ever get here! But now that the temperatures are finally starting to rise, the snow melting (hopefully) for good, and greenery beginning to poke through, we can emerge from our apartment cocoons and enjoy the beauty of Lee’s Summit again! If you’re looking for something to do to enjoy the nice spring weather, start with one of these five local destinations!
1. Missouri Town 1855
Located in Fleming Park off ark Road in Lee’s Summit, Missouri Town 1855 is an interactive, living history museum that shows what a progressive farming community would have looked like in the mid-1800s. Throughout the 30 or so acres more than 25 buildings sit with original structures, furnishings, and equipment for guests to walk through and experience. The museum is open year-round, but is especially nice in the springtime as extended hours start March 1st.
2. Lee’s Summit Parks & Recreation
It’s no secret that Missouri is beautiful, and Lee’s Summit is no different. The Lee’s Summit Parks & Recreation Department maintains several parks in and around the area that include playgrounds, sports areas, pools, as well as a Greenway Trail system that’s still being added onto. 3. Powell Gardens
For another option to experience nature, take a short drive to Powell Gardens, a botanical garden located in Kingsville. The not-for-profit sits on 970 acres of beautifully landscaped lush, rolling hills and meadows. Walk along the nature trail to experience gardens and architecture or participate in one of the special events they hold year-round.
4. Summit Fair
If being out in nature isn’t for you, maybe shopping is! Spring is the perfect season to head over to Summit Fair for some retail therapy. The 507,000 square foot open-air center has everything you may need in a mall and showcases shops up and down a Main Street area along with fountains, landscaping, and pedestrian walkways. 5. Stonehaus Farms Vineyard & Winery
Once you’re done at Summit Fair, take a short drive to Stonehause Farms Vineyard and Winery to finish up the day (or skip the shopping and go straight to the winery). Established in 1996, Stonehaus Farms Winery is a family owned and operated business that brought the art of winemaking to Lee’s Summit. Stop by to taste some of their fabulous wine or enjoy a wine and paint class held every Wednesday!
